Description

The Chameleon Ultra is a compact open-source RFID and NFC research device designed for contactless card development, authorized security testing, tag analysis, and access-control education. It supports both 13.56MHz high-frequency NFC/RFID technologies and 125kHz low-frequency RFID technologies in one portable platform.

Powered by the Nordic nRF52840 platform, the Chameleon Ultra combines card emulation, supported tag reading and writing, configurable storage slots, Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity, and USB-C communication. Its portable design makes it suitable for developers, security professionals, researchers, and students working with contactless identification systems.

Dual-Frequency RFID and NFC Platform

The Chameleon Ultra includes separate antennas for 13.56MHz HF and 125kHz LF operation. Each of its eight configurable slots can hold both one supported HF profile and one supported LF profile, allowing up to eight HF and eight LF profiles to be organized on the device.

Physical buttons allow users to move between active slots without opening an application, while onboard LEDs provide a clear indication of the currently selected slot and detected RF activity.

RFID and NFC Emulation

The device can emulate supported contactless tag technologies for development, compatibility testing, and authorized access-control research. Current firmware support includes selected ISO14443A, MIFARE Classic, MIFARE Ultralight, NTAG, EM410x, and HID Prox functionality.

Compatibility varies by tag type, reader configuration, firmware version, and implementation. Some technologies may be partially supported or limited to specific reading, writing, or emulation functions.

HF Tag Reading and Writing

Unlike emulation-only versions of the Chameleon platform, the Chameleon Ultra includes additional HF reader hardware. This enables supported ISO14443A cards and tags to be detected, read, analyzed, and written where the card technology permits it.

The device also includes tools for authorized MIFARE Classic research, including supported key-recovery and authentication-analysis workflows. These functions are intended for cards and systems owned by the user or tested with explicit permission.

125kHz RFID Functions

The Chameleon Ultra supports selected 125kHz low-frequency RFID technologies. It can read and emulate supported LF identifiers and can write compatible data to supported rewritable tags such as T5577 where permitted by the current firmware.

Eight Configurable Dual-Frequency Slots

The eight onboard slots make it possible to organize multiple authorized test profiles without repeatedly transferring files. Each slot can contain an HF profile, an LF profile, or both, while the active slot can be changed using the physical buttons or compatible software.

USB-C and Bluetooth Low Energy

The Chameleon Ultra can communicate through its USB-C data port or over Bluetooth Low Energy. Compatible desktop and mobile applications can be used to manage slots, read supported tags, configure emulation settings, transfer dumps, update firmware, and review device information.

Open-Source Firmware and Development Support

The Chameleon Ultra is built around an open-source ecosystem with publicly available firmware, command-line tools, documentation, communication protocols, and software development resources. Developers can inspect the project, build firmware, create compatible applications, and contribute improvements to the platform.

Important Compatibility Notice

RFID and NFC technologies differ significantly in frequency, protocol, security, data structure, and reader implementation. The Chameleon Ultra does not support every contactless card or guarantee compatibility with every reader. Supported functions may also change as the open-source firmware is updated.

Responsible Use Notice

The Chameleon Ultra is intended for development, education, research, and authorized security testing. Use it only with cards, tags, readers, and access-control systems that you own or have explicit permission to test. Copying credentials or attempting to access systems without authorization may be illegal.
